Using Your Blog as Your Website
We have been conditioned to believe that we need a static website and a separate blog. But the more I think about this, the more I think we may have our priorities backwards. Why not have the blog be the home page with a static website attached and only if needed.
It’s funny, search engines and people like some of the same things. Consistently updated content, with focus on certain areas of interest. Most people wouldn’t, for example, expect to find information about knitting on a golfing site…and quite frankly, neither do the search engines.
So, why not use your blog as the front page, building out additional pages for forms, merchandise, sales, etc. Today’s blogging platforms are incredibly flexible and sophisticated, but easy enough for the average person to update. Have you ever had someone build out a website for you, then have no idea how to update it? Worse yet, have to pay them to update it for you? Blogs are very lay-person friendly, and similar enough in format that if you can write and post on one blogging site, you can do it on others.
If you have a standard website with an attached blog, you can still benefit from the updated content. Just make sure you are linking your blog contents back to your static pages with regularity. And for those who don’t have a website, but are thinking about building one in the future…consider the blog, it’s great bang for your buck.

Carl,
good point and it’s been a model that I find works well. Usually, I use Xsite pro for the static sales pages, coupled with WP for the fresh content.
Cheers,
Steve
