Using Social Media to Increase Search Engine Visibility

Some social media sites offer great opportunities for increasing your search engine visibility. Using these sites repeatedly can drive traffic by increasing your rankings in search engine results. Though many sites are indexed, some offer a more effective platform for this purpose. Let’s take a look at the Google results for the search phrase “entrepreneurial skills”.

The first social media application we see is a blog address, betweenseeing. typepad.com,  in the number two spot.

In the third spot, we see an ezine article, Critical Entrepreneurial Skills. This tells us that for this particular search phrase, two out of the top three results are social media related.

Now, take a look at the remaining 7 results. You will find an article, a squidoo page and a blog post. That means that five of the top ten results, or 50%, were social media related.

This is incredibly powerful, when you think about it. In the past, top search engine rankings were often reserved for static websites and companies with IT departments. Now, social media users can benefit from the high rankings of some of the social media pages. By posting on pages with a higher page rank, their text is given greater importance. And, if that page also contains a link back to their site, they will also see a bump in future page rank scores.

Search engines like social media tools because these sites are constantly  generating new content…and this new content tells the search engine spiders to return and see what’s new on a more frequent basis. In order to take advantage of this phenomenon, identify one or two social media sites where you can contribute and promote your work on a fairly regular basis. Make sure to include language that is relevant to your site, and always a link to your site. Then, keep tabs on the effectiveness of your work with Google searches.
