Using Show Notes for Podcast Marketing

Using show notes for podcast marketing is a great way to promote your efforts. In fact, it is absolutely essential, and here’s why…podcasts are an auditory medium, something that isn’t indexed by search engines.

Potential podcast listeners have a challenging time finding new and relevant podcasts. Currently, there are podcast aggregating sites like itunes and podcastalley.com, but podcasts don’t always show up in search results. As we have talked about before, having a great title and accurate podcast description is essential. But that’s not enough to ensure your podcast makes a strong showing in big search engines.

That’s where show notes come into play. Show notes are a shorthand transcribed version of the podcast. These notes are an incredibly important marketing piece. And let me stop and clarify, show  notes are not word for word transcription, but more major theme and highlights of the cast. Taking this summary document and either posting it as a blog post, or as an accompanying PDF, will add the words necessary to get your podcast indexed.

Here are a couple of tips to help get you on your way to creating a powerful podcast marketing tool.

  1. Keep it concise. Again, this is not a word for word transcription process.
  2. As with everything you do on your blog (hopefully), make this keyword rich.
  3. Remember that people will read this to decide if your podcast has value, so don’t write it in a way that would appeal to search engines, but not to people
  4. Offer readers an extra or two by adding links to additional resources or linking back to other relevant podcast episodes

If you apply these four things in a consistent manner, you will gain increased traffic to your site, resulting in new podcast listeners. Writing show notes is a short and simple process whose benefits far outweigh the limited extra work that is involved.
