Using FaceBook to Market Your Blog

FaceBook is a well-known social networking platform that can be used to market your blog. And though many people know about it, they don’t know what marketing tactics to use and how to be effective at reaching their potential customers.

After using FaceBook consistently for a year or so, I have discovered a few tips that might help. Here are some insights I have accumulated.

  • You must build your “friend” list in a meaningful way…ie, through connections with people in your extended networks or by getting to know people in different groups. Adding random people you don’t know is of little help.
  • A really easy way to build your network is to use the FaceBook “people you may know” function. This FB feature identifies people in your extended network that you might know. Even if you don’t, you can send a note of introduction, mentioning that you have a friend (or three) in common.
  • Use your news feed to interact with your friends. This tells you when people change their profiles, have birthdays, etc. It also shows when your friends add contacts to their profiles.
  • You can search your friends’ contacts to find people that might have common interests.
  • Above all, don’t abuse this system…people will be very unhappy if you spam their friends with a bunch of marketing material. Constant updating of your status or profile will naturally draw people in…

FaceBook has good potential to send interested traffic to your blog…and if you set up the feed, your profile will be automatically updated everytime you post. This can extend your readership significantly. Just make sure you don’t push your message too hard and always respect the contacts you acquire.
