Survival of the Fittest: Pownce Bounces

Pownce announced its impending demise in a blog post today…Leah Culver announced in her blog that SixApart (Moveable Type and TypePad) had purchased Pownce. And though SixApart purchased the site, it is doubtful that Pownce will be re-incarnated. The demise of Pownce shouldn’t really be surprising, it has been falling behind other competitors, like Twitter, for quite a while. That coupled with the lack of a clear revenue model spelled certain demise.

How was Pounce (and other sites like it) planning on making money?  This critical question is the foundation for all business plans. Having a great idea simply isn’t enough…how will your actions build your bottom line?

And to bring this back to blog-reality, where does your blog fit in your business plan? Is its purpose to generate leads or revenue? Designate a time to build out a blog marketing strategy (if you haven’t already). By understanding the purpose of your blog, you won’t find yourself trying to course correct later down the line. The same good business practices that work in the “real” world, should be applied in the virtual world, too. Blogs and other social media platforms are tools that can expand your sphere of influence exponentially. But that influence is of little use if you aren’t prepared to take advantage of the opportunity.
