Social Media Marketing: User Generated Content

Social Media Marketing differs from traditional media marketing methods in multiple ways. But one of the most revolutionary is user generated content.

Traditional media has been dominated by those inside the industry. Those people inside served as gatekeepers to the system, screening data, determining what was important or “newsworthy”. Many press releases and marketing pitches have been made, and many have been rebuffed, and in all likelihood, that would have continued if we hadn’t had the social media revolution.

Suddenly, the Internet was awash with applications. In the beginning, blogs, forums and Instant Messaging cropped up. Then, podcasting and applications like YouTube, MySpace, FaceBook…followed by Flickr, Twitter, Delicious, Digg, Plurk, and so on, and so on…

These tools have created endless platforms for user-generated content. You can upload videos, text, music, podcasts, you name it. And you, the user, are in control of the content…a complete 180. Suddenly, traditional media isn’t looking so exclusive.

Unfortunately, we now have a glut of information. And some would say that user generated content is of lesser value than traditionally created content. How can you make your mark when there are hundreds of thousands of marks being made every day? Tune in for Part 2 of Social Media Marketing: User Generated Content.
