Search Engine Visibility and Your Target Audience

We always hear about making sure your blog has high search engine visibility. But have you ever thought about exactly who is looking?

We tend to think that “search engine visibility” is a static term that describes a blissful state of SEO nirvana. Once we have acheived that, all of our worries are over…um, not exactly. You see, having visibility is a good thing, but having visibility with the right people is a great thing.

Part of having this kind of visibility is discovering the language and locations of your target audience. Find out how and where they are searching for your product or service. An easy way to do this is to search for social network groups that are formed around a similar topic and compare the language they are using with your keywords. Add theirs to your list and start tagging your posts accordingly.

The next step is to write posts with this language in their communities. Whether it is a Facebook group or Ning site, posting in those locations will have a two-fold effect. One, it will give you immediate visibility with your target audience. And two, it creates the opportunity to build context rich backlinks.

In order for search engine traffic to be sticky, the searchers have to connect with your message and value. Not all traffic is relevant, make sure you are visible to the people who matter most.
