Quality v Quantity: Blog Writing For Beginners
Ok, so you’re sold on the value of writing a blog for your business, but you don’t know the first thing about blog writing. Fair enough. If you’re observant, you can pick up many good tactics as you develop your blogging skills. Pay attention to what other bloggers are doing, and blog writing will become second nature to you.
A question many people ask is “How often do I need to post?” It’s a good question and a bad one at the same time. Quantity has its place in blog writing, but what you’re really after is quality. The more quality you put into your posts, the more value your readers will draw from it. Another thing to keep in mind is that quantity isn’t a direct substitute for quality. If you’re blog writing because you’re trying to hit some magical numerical goal for posting, you’re going to miss your mark.
First, there’s no magic number, so you’ll be chasing your tail. Post at whatever frequency works for you and your business, and helps you achieve your blog writing goals. If that’s once a day, once a week or once a month, fine. The search engines like to see updated content, but that doesn’t mean you’re going to get killed in the search results if you miss a day. Likewise, you can post 30 times per day, and not make substantial progress on your search engine visibility.
I can’t say that quantity is irrelevant; it’s not. What will help you far more than quantity though, are meaningful, quality posts that are focused and valuable to your readers. These kinds of posts draw existing readers back to your site, and attract new readers. That’s the cycle you want to kick-start.
If you can do that with a single post each week, then once per week will suffice. In your particular blog, perhaps you need to post once per day. Maybe you can’t create real value without posting at least 10 times per day. Your posting frequency will depend heavily on the subject of your blog and what you’re trying to accomplish with your blog writing. As tempting as it might be to want one, there is no magic number when it comes to the frequency of blog posting.
