By submitting to general directories and regular directories, your site will be categorized for searches, will appear in search engines. So, greater audience reach and greater SEO benefits.

My favorite source for blog directories is Robin Good’s Top 55+ Blog Directories - each is a direct link to where you need to submit your site. It is constantly updated to refresh links or sources.

Others I would suggest: dmoz, Google directory, Technorati, and any regional-specific or topic-specific directories you can find.
