Building Connectivity Within Blogging Niches
There are a number of ways to build a blogging audience. One that is often talked about, but not as often implemented effectively is building connections with other bloggers in your niche. Usually, people interpret this to mean that you leave comments on other blogs that are like yours. I am not opposed to this concept, but this is not the only means of building community.
Think about the last time you left a “hit and run” comment on a blog that is in your niche. You know the kind I am talking about…where you Google Blog Search and find those similar to yours, then show up and leave a comment with a link back to your site. Not the best way to build bridges. How about taking the extra step to contact the author directly, let them know that you value their information. Or, sending an email in return when someone takes the time to comment on your blog.
Are you leaving comments on competitor’s blogs? That’s a no-no…how about leaving comments on old posts, hoping the author doesn’t see it and you get a little juice from the connection? Another big no-no…It is critical to ensure you are adding value to a blog when you comment. “Nice post” doesn’t cut it…that comment delete button is easy to hit.
You don’t have to be friends with all of the writers of blogs you follow (though there is no rule against it!), but you do need to operate with integrity. Reach out and make contact, then build connection over time by adding value and interacting with the blog owner.
