Blog Marketing…The Bedrock of New Media Strategy.
As companies and marketers clamor for the newest 2.0 marketing idea, I’m surprised by how many seem to be forgetting the tool that started it all - blogging. Blog marketing has proven effective (when done right) and should not be forgotten as the foundation of your 2.0 strategy. This should be obvious, but in case you believe the blog ship has sailed, think about this. Setting up a profile on Facebook is great, but then what?
How do you bridge your new, more personal audience (traffic) back to your website in a relevant way?
How do you keep your new social network of potential prospects interested in visiting your website again and again?
Where do you plan on directing the links from your Twitter posts and which articles are you going to Digg?
Hopefully the answer is your own branded blog. Social media and web 2.0 technologies are still getting most of the attention, but think of them more as an extension of your blog marketing strategy. Here is why you can’t treat them equally.
1. Your blog is a part of your website and as such, much stay close to your brand.
2. The idea of your social network is to build a network of people, which will be difficult to do if you only link to your own blog.
3. Content diversity will be lost.
Launching a social media strategy without a blog is possible, and it might even work depending on what kind of website you have. But for most companies, this just won’t work - a blog is a requirement to getting success from social media.
