Blog Marketing: Be the Expert

If you have been blogging for a while and are a student of social media, chances are great that you are ready to start sharing your findings with the rest of us. In a field as new as this, it doesn’t take long before you discover some new phenomenon or fact that could really benefit the collective. Even if your blog isn’t about social media, you can position yourself as a person in the know, as the go-to guru for that type of information.

The key is that you must find one or two things and specialize in those areas. Narrow down your topic enough that other people will know when to seek you out. As in, “Oh, yeah, go ask Joe, he knows all about widgets”.

My area of specialty is social media and some social media applications are just begging for a bright individual (with a lot of time on their hands) to dig through the data and create theories. One of my favorite applications is one that isn’t talked about too terribly often any more…Delicious has long been known for it’s bookmarking abilities, but I think it is incredibly under utilized for it’s market research and social networking potential.

Take your blog marketing to the next step and identify a couple of areas where you can be the expert. Share that information freely…direct people to posts that will be of benefit to them and they will add you to their list of places to go for information. Once people view you as a great resource, their loyalty increases and they are more likely to become a regular reader. In this way, both you and your reader benefit…which is really the whole point of social media.
