Blog Marketing and Rubber Chickens
Years ago I worked for a jet ski repair that stocked a small store catering to this segment of the outdoor market. We purchased our inventory from a large wholesaler and kept their catalog available for customer perusal in case in item had to be special ordered.
One day while looking with a customer for a particular item. we noticed that there was a silly rubber chicken posed by a picture of the widget we were looking for. There was no reason on earth for there to be a rubber chicken there. I pointed it out to the customer, we chuckled and proceeded looking for another widget and there was yet another rubber chicken posed in comical fashion on that page too. Soon we forgot looking for widgets and started looking for some more daffy chickens that the irreverent photographer had apparently placed throughout the catalog.
Here is the thing; while looking for more rubber chickens the customer ended up seeing, and ordering, several more widgets than he had originally planned buying.
To make a long story short, when first alerted the publisher of the catalog was on the verge of firing the photographer until it became evident that his little stunt had actually increased sales.
I am reminded of this by a blogging tip that I ran into that suggests that bloggers can take their reader (and customer) deeper into their website by giving them a similar “treasure hunt”.
“During our birthday month, we’ve got free gifts for you! Five Easter eggs are hidden throughout our web site. Find and click each egg, and you’ll receive a free, surprise product download.”
An innovative and simple blog marketing technique that gives your customer a few light hearted moments while increasing your product or service exposure.
