Apple’s iTunes RSS podcast standard

Apple has recently dediced to support Podcasting for it’s iTunes software. This is great news for the podcasting industry. Apple will become a major distribution channel and a way for RSS podcasts to become even more popular and accessable. But there is one major drawback. Apple chose not to adhere to the rss standard.

Apple is requiring that the rss podcast feed file contain additional fields. While this is not ideal, most podcast producers have no choice but to live with this non-standard  podcast requirements that Apple is requesting. Apple is looking for a few additional rss namespace tags such as "image".

So take the time to make sure your RSS feed is conforming to iTunes requirements if this is a priority for your business.
