What’s A Splog?
You’ve seen the term splog, but do you know what it means?
A splog is defined in the blogosphere at spam+blog. Here are some common splog characteristics that you need to avoid:
- Unreadable Keyword Usage
Try not to go crazy with the keywords. Yes they are important, but not important enough to get yourself banned by Google or to cause you to lose readers. - Improper Use of RSS
Some blogs are really just an empty shell that syndicate other’s content with no real original content. A hallmark of a splog is that they are ONLY syndicating content, not writing any. - Avoidance of Links Out
Splogs avoid sharing links. At the very least, you MUST credit your sources. Do not steal someone’s content without, at the least, a link back. - No Contact Info
Splogs don’t tell you who they are. - Comment Spam
Splogs leave their links on thousands of blogs by virtue of automated comment scripts. Avoid this distasteful practice.
Being guilty of splogging is rarely forgiven. Do not tie your company’s name to this practice.
