Yahoo and Online Media
One of today’s top stories is Yahoo!’s plans to unveil their video strategy at CES this week.
What’s different now is the convenience. A proliferation of high-speed connections has made downloading or streaming video much faster, opening the door to a wider audience.
What struck me as odd is that there is no mention of RSS in the entire article. How can they mention online television and convenience and not discuss the possibilities of RSS?
As more people have DVRs and Windows Media Center, we’ll see a convergence of the internet and television. Hopefully, they’ll get the monetization worked out soon. I can see something similar to iTunes, but open, that would allow free subscription to your favorite shows with links to the show’s site at the end of each show. Of course, the site and the downloaded episode would be monetized with advertising. And, maybe on the site you could choose to download the entire season (before it was released episodically) for a fee without ads.
Of course, if history is any indicator, the downloads will not be free for some time and many users will forgo the subscription until it is. I’d love to see some ideas on monetization that would allow the networks to get their money, and it still be free to the consumer.
